Horology
• Horology is the science of time, timekeepers (clocks, watches) and timekeeping.
• It started back in the days of the Babylonians (16th Century BC), invented the 60-second minutes and 60- minute hours.
• People interested in horology are called horologists. This term is used both by people who deal professionally with timekeeping apparatus (watchmakers, clockmakers), as
well as aficionado and scholars of horology.
Principles of time
• In 1878, Canadian Sir Sanford Fleming proposed worldwide time zones.
– The world be divided into twenty-four time zones, spaced 15
degrees of longitude apart.
– Since the earth rotates once every 24 hours and there are 360
degrees of longitude, each hour the earth rotates one-twenty-fourth
of a circle or 15° of longitude.
– First time zone is called “UTC” (Coordinated Universal Time) at
Prime Meridian (or GMT-Greenwich Meridian Time)
Daylight Saving Time
• Daylight Saving time (DST) or Summer Time (British) is the convention of
advancing clocks so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less.
• Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn.
• Many countries are still using it; details vary by location and changes occasionally.
• Benefits:
– Adding daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours
– Generally important to countries with agricultural industry
– Traffic fatalities are reduced when there is extra afternoon daylight
